Are your floors looking shabby but you can't afford to hire a professional in order to revamp them? Here are some tips:

1) Tip number one is to rent the tools, rather than buying them. Renting the tools means that you can get nearly any tool you might need and it will be well maintained when you pick it up. What tools you might need will depend on what type of floors you have and what you would like to do with them.

2) Before bringing the tools home, ask for a demonstration and a set of instructions to bring with you. This will save you questions and a trip back to the store.

3) If you have carpet that is dirty, you can rent a steam cleaner to extract the dirt and give the rugs a good washing.

4) If the carpet is worn out and unattractive, you can even rip out the old and put in some new carpet by using an extractor. The rental center carries trimmers, stretchers, kickers and seaming tools which will be necessary in order to re-install the new carpet.

5) If your wooden floor is dirty and dreary, you will want to clean and polish it with a professional grade polisher and buffer.

6) Dull and worn out floors will need to be refinished. For a hardwood floor refinishing job, you will need a sander, edger and sanding pad.

7) Old linoleum will need to be ripped out with the appropriate extractor tool. To reinstall new linoleum, you will need a heavy duty professional grade roller in order to press it firmly to the surface and remove any air bubbles or wrinkles as it adheres to the glue.

8) Tiling a floor will entail making sure the surface is smooth and level and free of lumps that would cause the tiles to be uneven. Sanding, cleaning, attaching backer board and then setting the tile with adhesive and the appropriate spacers will be your next steps. A wet saw will be necessary to cut the tiles into the proper sizes around edges and doorways.

9) Laminate flooring is available at a fraction of the cost of hardwood yet looks very similar. You would need hand and electric saws to complete this project as well as a good measuring tape.

10) If your hard surfaced floors are merely dirty and not in need of a total overhaul, make sure you use a gentle and non-abrasive surface to protect the finish.

Now that your floors are beautiful, all you have to do is load the equipment back into your car and return it to the shop. No maintenance, no storage, and no large outlay of cash.
