A college term paper is usually an essay that covers a major aspect of whatever you have been studying in that course. If you're an English major, your term paper will probably relate to a book or to the work of one particular author you have been studying.

A college term paper is rather different to the kind of compositions and book reports you may have written in school, you will need to deal with the subject in greater depth and have an understanding of the time and conditions under which the author was writing.

Most college term papers will require you to demonstrate an in-depth knowledge of a particular book or the work of a particular poet. If, for example, you were writing some sort of critique of the work of T.S. Eliot, you would need some understanding of how the First World War turned British society upside down.

Eliot and his contemporaries were aware that the war had fractured the social order and that the old certainties had passed away. You might also need to do a little research on the Bloomsbury Group, of which Eliot was a member.

Eliot is simply used here as an example of the kind of information required in a college level English term paper. In college you would have concentrated on the story and perhaps had to give some light explanation of narrative techniques. A college term paper would need to be written in a lot more depth than a school essay or book report. In college you will be expected to examine a writer's work against the background of their lives and of the social happenings of that time.

What you learn at college is that nobody produces a piece of work such as a novel or an anthology of poetry in a vacuum. The social history and attitudes at the time the piece was written are important because it makes it easier to interpret and understand what the writer was trying to say. Most authors and poets use their work to comment on what is happening in the world or to illustrate an aspect of the human condition during certain social or political events.

As soon as you have your topic for a college term paper, make sure that you fully understand what you are being asked to do. Once you are clear about the topic you can start to make a list of what you think are the key points that need addressing in the paper.

You can use the list you have written to guide you in your research. You may feel that in order to fully understand a certain writer's work you'll also need to examine some of the work of his or her contemporaries.

Writers often get together either at conferences or writers' groups and sometimes the beginning of a particular book only happens because of a chord that was struck in someone else's writing.

The thing that is most important to remember when you are writing a college term paper is that you will be required to show that you have not just read the work under scrutiny, but you have also read around it. Most writers, for example, Dickens, write about the times in which they live and the problems that occupy their time. In a term paper you need to show that you have some understanding as to how and why a certain text may have come into being.
