In its most basic form, public relations, or PR for short, is the practice of managing the communication between a company and its consumer. In Laymans terms, this generally means ensuring that the relationship between a business and all of their customers is positive and remains so throughout the duration of the life of the company.
Is it a general term?
PR is far from a term that can be called general. Whilst the basic principles are always the same and the techniques follow the same guidelines, there are many different forms of PR that are carried out, each varying depending upon the service area or industry that it is being carried out in.
For example, although many companies may offer PR as a standard practice, many companies will specialize in certain areas, such as media PR. In this instance, the company would have particular knowledge and experience in the workings of the media and how it can be utilized to ensure the best possible outcomes for a business when used for public relations purposes.
What is involved in public relations?
Depending upon the type of public relations that is being carried, out depends entirely upon what techniques are carried out. As mentioned, whilst the basic principles are the same for any industry and the same guidelines are always adhered to, the actual techniques may vary.
In media PR, for instance, only techniques that are media related, such as newspaper, television or radio, would generally be utilized for the best possible results for the company. Other techniques may be implemented, such as online banner advertising or assistance with Pay-Per-Click campaigns, but not to the extent as they would be if that particular PR specialty was carried out.
Who can benefit from it?
In essence, all companies will be able to benefit from some form of public relations. However, depending on what industry the company operates in depends on the public relations that should be carried out and therefore the results should be expected.
A prime example is a new celebrity magazine. Whilst it will gain popularity itself, by utilizing national newspaper and television advertising through media PR, its popularity will grow substantially in a small period of time. Although a standard PR company would be able to carry out an effective campaign, they would generally not be able to do so to an extent that a specialist media PR would.
How much does it cost?
As with the above points, the cost of PR depends on what type of PR is carried out. Furthermore, the type of company that is hired has a large effect on how much the overall cost will be.
A prime example is a national PR company who is carrying out substantial media PR for a large brand. In this instance, the cost would generally be high as both the PR company would be require a large figure because of needing to restrict their clientele to a minimal amount due to their popularity, as well as the actual work needing to be a of a substantial amount to ensure the large brand of the client continues to remain as popular as possible. |
