"Stop that." "You're so stupid." "What's wrong with you?" These are a few of the familiar sounds of the average non-stop, damaging tape-recordings going on in one's brain. You know - that part of yourself that "regulates" your behavior and actions by keeping you in check. That voice that tries to force you to comply with societal norms, or diets - or whatever you've got going on in your life. But if you listen closely, you might just find that this Inner Critic's voice is just a recording of things you learned as a kid. Many of us grow up in familial structures that are less than perfect. And we are exposed to a particular pattern of beliefs and thoughts. For example, if your Mother was a nervous person, she likely "programmed" you with tons of messages about safety and being careful. Depending on the level of the messaging, you might grow up to be an adult who plays it very, very safe - to your own detriment. You might make decisions based on an underlying fear that something bad might happen - or you might get hurt.So what happens is your Inner Voice does its job of keeping you safe by running a tape in your system about "playing it safe." And this might not be serving you. You might be avoiding situations that would really be wonderful for you - but you won't allow yourself to go there because of your old programming. As adults we have an opportunity to examine this voice - and learn how we might be limiting our experience in life due to old programming. But most people don't take the time to invest in this worthy process. They spend their life living on "auto-pilot" accepting things the way they are, and avoiding any deeply personal inner work. I find that to be incredibly sad.If you're one of those people committed to living a life filled with purpose and happiness, then you can achieve that goal with much greater ease, by taking this journey of discovering what's going on with your own tapes - and then reprogramming yourself with new ideas and beliefs that are really yours - not your parents!First, find an hour of uninterrupted time that you can devote to starting this process. You'll need some time alone so you can sit down and answer these questions:1. What are you most afraid of in the world? Discovering your deepest, darkest fears will help you get in touch with what you've been taught about the world.2. Be fearless - and allow yourself to be honest about this - what are you telling yourself over and over in your head?3. How do you feel about yourself? Do you like who you are? Are you empowered and living to your highest potential? Or are you playing it safe and small? Journal about this and look for patterns of beliefs that aren't serving you.4. Create a list of new and empowering beliefs and ideas that you want to empower yourself with.5. Once you discover the beliefs and old tapes that aren't serving you, dissolve the energy of them by using an energy healing technique. I recommend Meridian Tapping.Doing this kind of work takes courage, but it's so worth it. Each one of us has so many gifts to share in the world. But in order to share ourselves in a powerful way, and create a life of happiness, we really need to get in touch with the truth of who we are. And we can only do this when we look at - and release those beliefs that we adopted as kids that don't serve us as adults. |
