Dealing with difficult people in any aspect of your life means coping with difficult people in all situations. The Dealing with People cards, contain a full pack of annoying, frustrating and stressful people for you.PULLING OUT A CARD FROM THE PACKSo why don't we take a card from the pack right now. Let's say hello to them. You'll immediately know them as you'll have met them often in your personal life and in working with difficult people.QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS IN THE WORKSHOPSIn facilitating Dealing with People workshops, I'm asked most often about this sort of person. Can you relate too? "I am dealing with difficult people at work who are extremely negative, especially one person. But I'm not sure if I am just upset with them and they are not really that negative. How can I be sure it is not just me?YOU ARE NOT ALONE IN TRYING TO DEAL WITH THISHave you experienced this too? I have no doubt you have met others like this in dealing with difficult people at work and at home. They are found everywhere, in all walks of life and in all professions.WELCOME TO THOSE ABSOLUTELY NEGATIVE NORMSThis particular type of person is part of a group that I identify as Negative Norms. If you look in your pack of Dealing with People Cards they are always there. But how can you be sure that someone is really a Negative Norm?BEING NEGATIVE SOMETIMES IS OKIt is important to note, however, that feeling negative happens to all of us. At different times in our lives we feel some degree of negativity about things. You are both normal and human for feeling this.DEALING WITH DIFFICULT PEOPLE AND THE TESTWe do over-react sometimes with others, especially when we find them infuriating and annoying. But to get clear on whether you are coping with a Negative Norm, try this quick test.COPING WITH DIFFICULT PEOPLE AND THE TEST TO TRYUse the Negativity Test. The Negativity Test is all about listening to the language that people use on a consistent basis. A very negative person thinks in negative thoughts and uses very negative words and language all the time. They go beyond cautious and wary and tell you why something can never be done or will never work.WHAT DOES A NEGATIVE NORM SOUND LIKE?They also look at any circumstances and recognize only negative aspects. Instead of turning lemons into lemonade, they do the opposite. They take lemonade and turn it back into lemons. They are certainly not optimistic and are full of pessimism. So hear the language they use. Over a certain time period, listen closely and write down if they use mostly positive or negative words. The more negative their language and a lack of positive statements means that you are dealing with a Negative Norm.THIS IS GREATER KNOWLEDGE FOR YOUThis helps you understand why you too feel negative, depressed and down when with them. They have that knack of sucking any degree of optimism from you. Of course, you can use a range of strategies on how to deal with difficult people like this. But your most important strategy is to begin with using this test and see if you have drawn the Negative Norm card from the pack in dealing with difficult people.
